On MIT’s list of 101 things to do before graduation for the class of 2012, there has always been one elusive item that confused me: #5: Understand the true meaning of IHTFP. The five letters of IHTFP, which can mean a variety of things to a variety of people, have been passed down through MIT generations as a sort of rite of passage. To students, sometimes it’s “I Have Truly Found Paradise.” Sometimes, it’s “I Hate This F-ing Place.” As my last semester began, I started to wonder if I would know when I really knew the meaning of this saying. Thinking back on the past four years, I can finally say I do. I can also cross off #2 (Pull an all-nighterfor fun). I actually had more all-nighters for fun than for schoolwork in the past four years. In chronological order, they were: 1) to finish my first engineering project 2) to make this flag with Martha ’12 for the Cross Country and Track teams 3) after an 8:00PM track race that went well and I was so hyped up on happiness, adrenaline, and post-race chocolate that I didn’t snap out of it until I found myself sorting laundry at 4 in the morning in the basement of my dorm, Baker House. 4) while working a shift at Baker desk and I got myself into a Glee, Modern Family, Community, and New Girl epic marathon. But I think the more powerful things I’ve gotten away from my four laps around this track called the Institute were the unexpected lessons.The GEL program has a portfolio presentation requirement for its Two-Year Program students. This is an opportunity for us to tell the staff what we have learned from GEL and how our leadership style has changed over the years. I joined GEL for the opportunity to develop leadership skills in a technical setting, but it amazes me to see how the lessons have reached into non-technical fields, too. I know how to write a specification for a project. I know how to follow one.   I know what to do if I have an idea for an improvement to the project. I know how to negotiate. I know the importance and value of having a mentor. I couldnt say any of this two years ago, so even though I have more to learn, I feel like an entirely different person than the Maggie from 2008. When I came to MIT, I lived in a quad and kind of had the reputation as “the quiet one.” I would generally sit at my desk and not bother anyone while doing homework. One day, our neighbor Lizz came in to offer her daily dose of humor. “What do you call cheese that isn’t yours?” Something in my mind broke at that second. This was my go-to joke in high school, and floods of memories flashed before my eyes as I spun around in my chair and exclaimed, “NA-CHO CHEESE” with the sass of a 30-year-old hair salon stylist. Lizz and I have been best friends ever since. And neither of us has any sort of quiet reputation. When I came to MIT, I wanted to be a biology researcher. My life goal was to be published in big science journals, so I worked in three different labs during my undergraduate years. One of those experiences was a year-long UROP working with polymers as a cell environment. At the end of the project, I asked my supervisor if I could write an article for the MIT Undergraduate Research Journal, and she said yes! So, within a few months, I got my first research publication. It was small, but it was a start. And that was when I realized that I could actually get things done with my writing. Ideas would hit me at night and I jumped out of bed to start typing. In fact, I started my first draft of this entry at 1:20AM because I was too afraid the narrative would escape me in the morning. One of my favorite memories of MIT will be writing this article, which I had been working on for two months as I talked with MITs former President, Vice President and Secretary of the Corporation, and Chancellor along with countless faculty, staff, students, and alumni. People came up to me to tell me they read the article with tears in their eyes. None of my research had ever moved someone liked that before. I’ve never turned in a pset and heard a grader say, “wow, that really made me change the way I think about things.” But I’ve found something that can have that effect, and I don’t want to let it go. And before anyone scoffs to say why I love writing at a tech school, this past semester I wrote grant proposals for a writing project on biomedical engineering in Vietnam this summer, and it was that writing that convinced a very generous individual to offer guidance through my planning stages. I wouldnt have the vision for this project if it wasnt for effective writing. When I came to MIT, I generally stuck to the safe road. This summer, thanks to MISTI I’m going to a country I’ve never been to before to work in an industry I have little experience in and speak a language I’ve only been studying since January. It’s terrifying, yes, but I know that by Thanksgiving I will know about all those things and much more. When I came to MIT, I knew very few people. I walked down the hallway of Baker House, dropped my stuff off in my room, and started knocking on doors to meet people. I met a sophomore who was still my friend even as she graduated last year. Now, I feel like a member of a larger community. As the last touch of my final entry, I wanted to leave some closing thoughts for the youngn’s out there. I realize it comes after Elizabeth’s amazing doodles of inspiration, and cant touch the epicness of this and this, but consider this your extra helping of MIT advice: These are just some of the seniors of Baker House! Josh, Juan, Alisha, Tim the Beaver, Mary, Yun, me, and Allison celebrated the end of 4 great years. And, above all else: Oddly enough, I am really going to miss doing workouts on the outdoor track in October, when the sunset behind Simmons is actually brilliant. And you know what? I’m even going to miss that one bird outside my dorm room window whose chirping has teased me during many late nights starting around 2:30. I only say that because I could hear it when I started drafting this entry. It’s yet another memory I’ll take with me from MIT.

This putative outer frame, which is supposedly Tolkiens source of narration, is imperative to the novel’s su ccess and acclamation. The frame structure allows Wharton to prove her intentions of a realistic picture through the construction of, and attention to, â€Å"minor detail.† (Wharton xviii). Like uncertainty and dimension, these elements also convey realism and are prevalent throughout the frame. Mattie Silver is a dynamic and round character, she is extremely realistic and increases in complexity alongside Ethan Frome. On the other hand, Ethan Frome being quiet by nature represents Wharton’s reticent intentions. The combination of the frame narrative, the narrator, and realistic intentions all come to a conclusion in the epilogue. Here, Wharton settles the frame story and shifts the point of view to the narrator. The narrator concludes, â€Å"They all tho ught Mattie couldn’t live. Well, I say it’s a pity she did.† (Wharton 157). By ending the frame structure on such unexpected yet profound terms, Wharton touches upon the roots of realism by reflecting her many intentions. The uncertainty and dimension, as mentioned earlier, play an impactful role in the deduction of realism. The uncertainty of whether Mattie would live or not, and the dimensions involving their societal backlash, all contribute to Wharton’s final frontier of realism. Not to mention, Matties conclusive â€Å"roundness† as a character, where she now faces the pinnacle of complexity alongside Ethan. From the prologue to the epilogue, the frame structure encapsulated all these elements and developed a sophisticated outlook on the story for the reader. Additional structural successes of the novel lie in the light and dark imagery, which Edith Wharton uses as a stage light for certain scenes. In literal essence, stage lighting is the craft of light applying to live performance arts. The direction and color of the stage light implicate a certain image and atmosphere. Likewise, Wharton uses light and dark imagery to highlight certain aspects of the story, while also setting a mood. Simply, Ethan’s desires for Mattie are represented by light and warmth, while Zeena and reality are represented by darker imagery. During the night of Zeena’s absence, Ethan and Mattie’s shared moments represent the warmest of colors. As they converse, Ethan notices â€Å"the lamplight sparkling on her lips and teeth† (Wharton 79), and he watches the way her face changed â€Å"like a wheat-field under a summer breeze† (Wharton 79). Juxtaposing the colorful prominence, Ethan is also faced with darkness amidst Zeena’s sudden disapproval for Mattie. At this point, Ethan faces an all-time low which is reflected in the light imagery: â€Å"There was no way outnone. He was a prisoner for life, and now his one ray of light was to be extinguished.† (Wharton 117). Ethan is hopeless and the light in him slowly fades into the darkness. The presence of light and darkness juxtapose various scenes, once again, adding dimension and realism. The tragic novel is pervaded with darkness, however, the occasional flashes of light add to the multi-dimensional platform of the story. All the literary and structural device used by Wharton continue to epitomize Ethan Frome as a timeless novel. She used these techniques to touch upon the roots of humanity through the incorporation of realistic perpetuation: where realism is continuously preserved to represent a truthful story. The two personality inventories that my cousin and I took part in measure the five factors that most psychologists use in studying the personality of the individual. However, each test was administered by a different group and found on a different website. Both tests provide a set of questions that measure what are considered to be the five basic dimensions of one’s personality: extraversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience. The descriptions of each of the basic dimension were derived from the work of John Johnson. In addition to measuring the big-5 dimensions, the test also included items about one’s musical preferences and cognitive ability. There were a total of 60 questions about the big-5 dimensions and an additional 26 about musical preference and cognitive ability. Upon comparing my results of the test to that of my cousin, I found out that of the five dimensions measured, we differed significantly in only one dimension, extraversion. My cousin is considered to be more of an extravert than I am. In fact, he scored very high in the said dimension. On the other hand, out of 100, I only rated 34. He is considered to be highly sociable, energetic, and outgoing. My score, on the other hand, is seen as average. According to the description given, I am neither a loner nor a social butterfly. In other words, there are times I prefer to be around other people enjoying their company but there are also times that I prefer to be alone. For the dimension of agreeableness, we both were rated high, meaning, we both possess a strong interest in other people’s needs. As both our reports said, â€Å"You are pleasant, sympathetic, and cooperative.† For conscientiousness, both my cousin and I scored high. This high score indicates that we set our goals and aim to achieve these goals. Likewise, we are both considered to be hard-working and reliable. With regards to the dimension of emotional stability, both of us scored high which indicates that we are calm and not easily rattled or stressed. Furthermore, it says that we remain unaffected by intense situations. For the last dimension, openness, both my cousin and I scored average. According to our reports, this meant that we are not purely conventional nor are completely radical. In other words, we enjoy certain traditional things but are somewhat open to venturing out to unfamiliar things as well. The second personality inventory we took measure the same personality dimensions as the first. The test is available to anyone through the website: http://www.outofservice.com/bigfive/. There are a total of 48 items in the test. The participant is asked to rate their agreement with a given statement about themselves from a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 meaning complete disagreement and 5 meaning complete agreement. These items will see how the participant perceives himself to be like. My results in this test did not differ much from the first test. The main difference was that in this test, I scored low in openness to experience. In this test, I found out that I am conventional. In the earlier test I was neither conventional nor the opposite. For the other dimensions, my scores were very similar to the first. Basically, the test told me that I am well-organized and reliable. Also, it said that I am neither reserved nor particularly social. Furthermore, my results indicated that I was considerate of the feelings of other people and that I remain calm even in tense situations. On the other hand, the results of my cousin in this test remained consistent with his earlier test. As such, in this test, our differences lie in the dimensions of extraversion and openness. This test revealed that he was highly sociable and that was neither conventional nor complex. As for the dimensions of conscientiousness, agreeableness and emotional stability or neuroticism, our scores did not differ significantly indicating that we shared such personality traits. I learned several things from taking the two tests. First, it was able to tell me certain things about my personality. I discovered that I should not consider my self as completely unsociable for I do have the capability to mingle and enjoy my time with other people. I have long seen myself as being a loner but the tests have shown me that I indeed have it in me to enjoy the company of other people. Secondly, taking the test made me realize that indeed people who are alike tend to stay together. I am very close to my cousin. With our results being very similar, I realized that it was because we were very much alike in certain areas. Finally, the tests gave me a glimpse as to who I am.
